Biography
Ambassador Bandler has extensive experience in the public and private sectors achieving political, security, commercial and trade policy results in the international arena. During 28 years at the Department of State, Don had assignments that included: Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus; Special Assistant to the President and Counselor to the National Security Advisor for the 42-nation NATO Summit; Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Europe in the National Security Council; Deputy Chief of Mission and Acting Ambassador in Embassy Paris; Political Minister-Counselor during the fall of the Berlin Wall and German unification; Director of the Office for Israel and the Palestinian Authority; Congressional Relations, the Secretary of State's Policy Planning Staff, US Coordinator for the 35 nation CSCE process, African Affairs and the Carnegie Endowment's "Face to Face" program.
From 2002-03, Don was Senior Vice President for Government Affairs at the Monsanto Company, where he worked closely with US officials to resolve regulatory issues with Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. From 2004-07 he was the Senior Director for Europe at Kissinger McLarty Associates, a consulting group that helps companies navigate today's competitive business climate. He worked closely, for example, with a German industrial company to build its transatlantic business with Boeing; helped an American shipping company avert a Greek-Turkish crisis at sea; and helped resolve numerous commercial and regulatory issues.
From August to January 2007 Don served as Tony Blair's Head of Mission in Jerusalem with a mandate to build Palestinian economic capabilities and advance the prospect of a negotiated peace between the government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority. From February through August 2008, he was the Provost's Distinguished Visitor at the University of Southern California.
Mr. Bandler received a B.A. cum laude with honors from Kenyon College, an M.A. in Classics from St. John's College, a J.D. from George Washington University Law School, and an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Kenyon College. He received the State Department's Superior Honor Award on four occasions, and was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1998. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Executive Board of Directors of the Atlantic Council, the Board of Our Military Kids, and is affiliated with the Center for Economic Policy Analysis. His commentaries have appeared in the Financial Times, Newsday, The National Interest, Cambridge Review of International Affairs, and he is a published photographer.
