To be honest I've never been fired or laid-off but I've seen enough of it, particularly in the last 18 months, to have a glimpse of how devastating and life changing such an event can be. It's natural to experience the stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, but I would add to this list - take the time to look for the opportunity. While I may not have been laid off before, like all of us I've experienced tragedy and I firmly believe that there is opportunity in every life changing experience if you stay positive and keep your eyes open. Here are some thoughts that you should consider in these situations.
Step #1: Take a good skills inventory. Look at your life/work skills in the broadest possible context don't stovepipe yourself in the industry segment that you are most familiar with. Not a "software sales person" but a "sales professional", not a "program manager" but a "management professional". Map your skills to what you liked the most in your previous job and determine how those skills can be applied to other industry segments.
Step #2: You are not old, you're at the height of your knowledge and experience. While you may be thinking who will hire a 50 - something year old, your experience in your field is unparalleled. Think of how you have seen industries change and adapt over time and your ability to have managed through those changes - this knowledge is irreplaceable. You are not defined by a number; you are the sum of your work and life knowledge and experience.
Step #3: Take a risk. Most of us, at least when it comes to our careers, are risk averse. If you get laid off in your 50's you may be thinking about what this will do to your retirement plans. But consider this, you are at the height of your business knowledge and experience, your kids are probably through college or close, maybe it's time to step out on your own - do something you love. You may be in the best position you have ever been in to try something new or become an entrepreneur.
Step #4: You are an amazing and unique individual. If you can't find this truth in yourself then no one else will.
When Plan A does not work - turn Plan B into Plan A.
